Many people don’t know where is Catalonia, nevertheless almost everyone knows about Barcelona. If you know Barcelona you can infer where and what is Catalonia when I tell you that Barcelona is its capital.

Catalonia is an Autonomous Community of the Kingdom of Spain, located in the North-East, from the French Pyrenees to the Valencian Community and the Aragon Community in the West.

Ok, therefore Catalonia is just another Spanish Region or Autonomous Community, isn’t it? Yes, it is. However it’s a bit more complicate… How much complicated is it? Well, I am going to say only two words… Politics and Economics.

And just watch the following video which is not the best… but shows a brief picture of Catalonia.

Finally I got my Garmin Forerunner 405 working on Ubuntu! [1]

Well, a forerunner is a wristwatch that helps you to keep track of your training during and after the exercise. It monitors the pace, the heart rate, the speed, the route, etc.

How to configure it? (once)

Open a Terminal for the installation [2]

cd ~littleowl
wget http://cgit.get-open.com/cgit.cgi/gant/snapshot/gant-master.tar.bz2
tar -xjf gant-master.tar.bz2
cd gant-master
make

Forerunner 405 and the ANT usb are ready!

How to use it?

1. Plug the ANT usb into your computer and set your wristwatch in Pairing mode as shown below

Menu > Settings > ANT+Sport > Computer > Pairing > set to On

The wristwatch will ask you whether you want to pair it or not. Also check that,

Menu > Settings > ANT+Sport > Computer > Force send > set to Yes
Menu > Settings > ANT+Sport > Computer > Enabled > set to Yes

2. After that, two commands are required to connect devices and to download all data. [2]

/home/littleowl/gant-master/gant -f littleowl -a auth405 (accept pairing on your wristwatch)
/home/littleowl/gant-master/gant -nza auth405 > output

I added two icons to launch these commands from the Desktop (launchers), thus I don’t need to use the Terminal anymore (command-line interface) [3]

From now on I am able to upload and keep track of my training on Internet using Strands, Garmin Connect, and even from my computer using SportTracks, etc.

Banbury Cross

The symbol of the town is Banbury Cross and its “Fine Lady” who It’s rumoured that was actually a Fiennes lady from Broughton Castle.

Tinc una nova càmera fotogràfica. Des de que vaig emigrar a vegades he trobat a faltar poder plasmar alguns moments o localitzacions. Fins ara totes les fotografies que heu pogut veure pel bloc, el picasa, el facebook o el flickr, no han sortit de les meves mans sinó que algú altre me les ha cedides gentilment.

No sóc un expert en càmeres ni molt amic de transportar trastos amunt i avall. Així­ doncs he optat per una màquina lleugereta, barata i petita. Com que no tinc gaire idea de píxels, resolucions, òptica i aquests tecnicismes… em vaig deixar guiar per l’assessorament d’algú que en sap més que jo i al final he triat una Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS per ebay sense pensar-m’ho gaire.

Porto pocs dies jugant amb ella però per primera vegada sembla que li estic agafant una mica d’interès a això de la fotografia. Principalment crec que és fruit a les eines facilitadores que m’he trobat.

Per una banda tinc obert un compte “pro” al flickr des de fa uns mesos per altres motius que ara no venen al cas i, per una altra banda, al connectar la càmera al portàtil amb linux se m’ha integrat directament amb l’aplicació F-Spot tot facilitant-me la tasca d’organitzar, classificar i fins i tot editar fotografies. Ja sé que no he descobert la roda i que tot això, o quelcom similar, existeix de fa bastant de temps. Però és d’aquelles coses que si no te les trobes tampoc t’hi poses doncs no era del meu interès o afició.

En els darrers dos anys he realitzat molts viatges llampecs, a casaments, vacances partides en tres localitzacions diferents, i caps de setmana d’escapades. Tot un luxe però n’he acabat cansat doncs gairebé em passava més hores viatjant que gaudint del break corresponent. Així què al final he decidit reservar-me uns quants dies per a parar quiet, per a desconnectar, per a no anar contrarellotge, per a fer el què em vingui de gust, per a pensar, per a renovar energies i potser fites. I el millor lloc per a fer-ho no és un altre que a casa, a Barcelona.

Però per a que l’experiència sigui completa tambè vull retrobar-me amb els seus carrers, amb les múltiples hores d’entrenament i quilómetres d’asfalt recorreguts en el passat. I l’escenari ideal és la Marató de Barcelona, a la qual no hi participo des de que varen canviar l’itinerari i ara recorre carrers cèntrics passant per diferents punts emblemàtics de la ciutat com el Camp Nou, la Pedrera, la Sagrada Família, etc.

Demà comença el compte enrera. Catorze setmanes d’entrenament que hauré de compaginar amb viatges, el Nadal, el Cap d’Any, visites, vida social, certs banquets inevitables, el cansament, la constància, possibles lesions, la feina, el fred, la foscor dels carrers, la pluja, potser la neu i jo mateix. Tot un repte.

Per a dur a terme aquest repte seguiré el pla d’entrenament penjat a la pàgina web de la Marató de Sub 3h. 30m. L’hauré d’adaptar a la meva vida diària perà amb la ferma intenció de ser-li fidel al màxim. I per a no sentir-me sol durant aquestes setmanes he trobat algú que m’acompanyarà en algunes sortides, i virtualment compartiré experiències amb en Joel, potser també amb els correcats, i qui sap si algú més s’apunta durant els propers dies o setmanes.

Salut i kilòmetres!

Des de fa pocs mesos els supermercats de l’àrea a on visc han apostat fort pel medi ambient i ofereixen incentius si no utilitzes bosses de plàstic al fer la compra. Per a facilitar la tasca tenen a molt baix preu bosses fetes amb material “ecològic” o de plàstic resistent. Aquí em vaig trobar amb una petita contradicció.

La majoria de súpers em donen una bossa de plàstic reutilitzable i ultraresistent com a sustitutiu de les clàssiques bosses blanques de plàstic. Sí­, és molt millor emprar una reutilitzable que una nova cada vegada que vas a comprar. Però per a mantenir una mica de coherència em vaig decantar per una bossa feta d’un material més ecològic i podria dir que més artesanal.

Acabo de tornar de fer la compra tot content i al dipositar-la sobre el “marbre” de la cuina (en realitat és un conglomerat de fusta) m’hauria de sentir content i realitzat d’haver aportat el meu granet de sorra a la cura del medi ambient. No obstant, a mesura que vaig traient els aliments i posant-los a la nevera em vaig “deprimint”. La col embolicada amb un plàstic, el mateix per la coliflor, la mongeta tendra i el formatge, una bossa pel pebrot, una per les pastanagues, una pel tomàquet, per la carn i peix són com capcetes de plàstic, i així­ amb gairebé tots els productes.

Al final, un cop posats els aliments al seu respectiu lloc, em queda sobre el “marbre” una muntanya de plàstics. I em quedo pensatiu… si ara hi afegís la bossa blanca que abans utilitzava… resultaria quasi insignificant. I si tinc en compte que en tinc un calaix ple pq sempre les he intentat reutilitzar… De debó estic reciclant millor?

Sí, estic reciclant millor. Doncs es consumeixen milers i milers d’aquestes bosses blanques a diari al fer la compra. Però encara no tinc la sensació q reciclo bé tot i la propaganda constant per la televisió i al supermercat. Hi ha alguna cosa q falla o falta.

One week ago I ran the Robin Hood Half Marathon at Nottingham. It was very special for me because I had not run any race in a long time. None since I’m in England.

Last Xmas I decided to do something because I was overweight and I didn’t feel well. Therefore I joined the Gym last January. It was very hard at the beginning but I lost ten kilograms after six/seven months. I felt myself fit again and an Half Marathon was a good challenge for someone who hasn’t run for a long time.

Thanks to a co-worker, I decided to join that race. I tested myself only one week before the run. I was happy with the test but I did realise that a Half Marathon could be too much. But It was too late to change my mind.

I thought to start the race with a couple of goals. For one hand I couldn’t stop, and for another hand I had to keep running at 5 min/km (8 min/mile) all race. It means to finish it in 1h45min.

The day of the Half Marathon I was very nervous. That morning I forgot the Chip and my wristwatch at home. I am very thankful to the organization to provide me with another Chip. And I asked the time to other runners during the race, thank you runners!

I enjoyed it and I liked it very much. It is wonderful back to run again! And I am happy because I did as I planned. My running time was slightly under 8 min/mile for first 10 miles. Last three miles were painful but I am glad I kept running. It was very helpful to find the runner with the “1h45min” signal within last two miles.

Before the race I met some Catalan guys from the webforum correcats. They were really funny. Two of them ran the Full Marathon and they all did quite well. Congratulations guys and many thanks for your friendship!

Finally I have to congratulate my co-worker too. She did very well and, the most important, She raised a lot of money for her sponsorship (charity).

Next challenge: Barcelona or London Marathon? Who knows.

Fa unes poques setmanes vaig baixar a Saragossa a visitar la Expo ZGZ 2008. En un principi anava només jo a casa del Manuel, un amic del poble (La Ginebrosa). Però en uns dies s’hi van apuntar uns quants amics més de la penya del Manuel i la meva germana (Els Penchats). Al final n’érem set.

La Expo em va agradar molt. Té molts racons interessants, tant l’estructura i composició exteriors com l’interior d’alguns pavellons. El problema van ser les llargues cues per accedir als pavellons que generen una major expectació. En alguns dels quals la cua superava l’hora d’espera. Per aquest motiu va ser impossible poder visitar tota l’exposició i em van quedar molts pavellons pendents que només vaig poder veure per fora.

La llàstima va ser el xàfec que ens va caure per la tarda. La Expo sobre l’Aigua es va convertir en una Expo passada per Aigua. Tot i aquests inconvenients la impressió general va ser molt positiva. Recomano fermament fer una escapada i visitar-la. Ara bé, no recomano anar-hi en cap de setmana per no trobar-se les cues que vaig patir i no em varen permetre veure tot el que volia.

A Saragossa li han fet un bon rentat i és el moment ideal per anar-la a visitar de nou o per primera vegada. I això­ vàrem fer per aprofitar al màxim el cap de setmana. Amb “els Penchats” vaig redescobrir la vida de bars i nocturna saragossana que feia molts anys que no vivia des de la meva adolescència a les festes del Pilar. I amb la Merche i el Jose de la meva penya del poble (Los Mochuelos) vaig fer la visita “cultural” tot visitant la Alfajería i el centre. Gràcies a tots per aquest cap de setmana.

Anècdota:

Estem en un bar de la zona Universitària i ens disposem a demanar uns entrepans i begudes. Agafem taula i el Manuel va a la barra a demanar. Com que a mi em falta la beguda m’acosto a la barra a demanar-la. En Manuel va demanant mentres jo miro la carta de cerveses d’importació. Quan només resta la meva beguda per demanar ja m’he decidit i li dic “Adelscott”. En aquell moment ens trobem a la barra tots dos amb el cambrer a l’altre cantó. I el cambrer li diu al Manuel, “Dile a tu amigo que esa cerveza no la tenemos”. Com si es tractés d’un acte reflex agafo al Manu pel braç i li dic en un to juganer “Dime que no tienen esa cerveza”. El cambrer es dóna compte, li costa un parell de segons de reaccionar i diu alguna cosa com “Creía que eras estranjero”.

Em faria molta més gràcia sinó fos la segona vegada consecutiva que baixo a Spain i em prenen per un guiri. Veure anècdota en aquest post.

Recently I was doing a bit of a tidy up in my computer and I found some old notes about Extreme Programming (hereafter XP). Few days later I was in a bookshop and I saw the Pocket Guide “Extreme Programming” (O’Reilly). I decided to purchase it without any doubt. I really do not need the book because I have always found everything about XP on the net. But I felt an “Extreme” impulse…

XP is the first agile method I met some years ago. I am thankful to the knowledge behind this methodology, because it taught me some great ideas, new points of view, and good practices about software development (refactoring, test-driven development, life-cycle, deal with customers and developers, etc).

I think XP is wonderful but it needs some special conditions or environment to be successful which sometimes are very difficult to achieve. So I have always applied some variants or another agile method depending of my surroundings. To be honest I have never completely applied XP. But It was “the door” to another world, the Agile Software Development.

Therefore… Yes!, I had to buy the book… And I already read it, sitting on a park last weekend, surrounded by squirrels and dogs. I think I am going to have more “impulses”. I discovered that I prefer to read in the park rather than read in front of my laptop.
